A new site

carving out my corner of the web

It’s been nearly twenty years since I’ve had a personal site. I’ve pretty much always been allergic to self-promotion, but I’m trying to get more comfortable with it. I think one of the main challenges is just deciding what to highlight, and what tone to use - specifically in situations where I don’t know the people I’m speaking to well.

The last time I built something like this, I was in college. I think I used Movable Type. I had a blog, and a CV, and that might have been about it. My memory is fuzzy, but I think I took it down around the first time I left Red Hat - and the software industry - and decided to go be a bicycle advocate. But that’s a story for another time.

I first started thinking about putting one together sometime in 2023, after reading a thread on Mastodon wherein a bunch of software engineering managers discussed how negatively they viewed an engineer who didn’t have one. I’ve never been one to put a whole lot of effort into things just to fit in, so it was a long time before I got serious at all about the idea. But I kept seeing references to things like the small web and something began to percolate.

An old, familiar, but faded feeling was creeping in.
